Reserve and Estate Wines

Margaret River Classics

Regionality and ‘Terroir’, the French concept of climate, soil and winemaking combining to make wines speak of their place, sums up Cape Landing’s philosophy of wine creation limited exclusively to our own location.

Our Reserve and Estate wines are made entirely from fruit produced in our own single vineyard located in Forest Grove in the southern part of the Margaret RIver wine region. This is unique area recognised for its cool, consistent, maritime climate, and capacity to produce elegant medium bodied premium wines defined by their fruit character, aromatics, structure and balance.

Reserve wines

Cabernet Sauvignon

Variety, location, and viticultural technique all contribute to creating award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon at Cape Landing.

Our Cape Landing Cabernet Sauvignon has been recognised in local and international wine shows, in wine competitions and in panel reviews by independent experts.

Our Cape Landing Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 was recently recognised with a Gold Medal and a rating of 95 points in the Halliday Wine Companion 2022.

We continue to re-work and revitalise our Block CL8 Cabernet Sauvignon. We put particular emphasis on canopy development throughout the growing season, cane pruning the vines up to six weeks earlier than other varieties, using a combination of either 2 or 4 canes, rather than spurs, to manage yield, and encourage an even spread of fruit and greater exposure to sunlight and airflow.

Chardonnay

Gingin Chardonnay from Cape Landing’s Block CL6, first planted in 1998, has been routinely used in premium and reserve wines throughout the Margaret River wine region by a number of well known wine makers.

In addition to producing outstanding Chardonnays from Block CL6, we have also cloned the vines from Black CL6 to establish our younger Block CL1 Gingin Chardonnay.

Cape Landing’s other Chardonnay varietals include Block CL3 (Clone 95), Block CL5A (Clone 5) and Block CL5B (Clone 3).

Each block of fruit has its own distinct, bespoke, personality.

Our Chardonnay’s are lightly oaked, packed full of lean, fresh, citrus flavours and reveal multiple layers of textural complexity and natural acidity.

The quality of our Reserve Chardonnay has been recognised in the Halliday Wine Companion and in many local and international wine shows.

Syrah

Cape Landing’s Reserve Syrah is made exclusively from 22-year-old shiraz harvested each vintage year from Block CL7.

This block at our Calgardup Road vineyard, renown for its high-quality fruit, is a long time favourite of many regional wine makers.

We make the most of Margaret River’s cooler climate and more southerly location to produce a medium bodied Syrah, cast in a lighter, more elegant, spicier, modern Australian style that has more in common with the wines of the Northern Rhône in France than the Shiraz producing wine regions of eastern Australia.

The quality of our Reserve Syrah has been recognised in the Halliday Wine Companion and in many local and international wine shows.

The judges at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2021 noted that our Cape Landing Reserve Syrah 2019 was “Musky, sweet, charming pastille fruit and hints of bacon and leather on supple tannins, leading to a long tail.

Sauvignon Blanc

A frequent award winner at the Langton’s Margaret River Wine Show and the Decanter World Wine Awards, our Sauvignon Blanc quickly established itself as one of Cape Landing’s most popular and successful wines.

We are particularly proud of the Gold Medal awarded to Cape Landing’s Sauvignon Blanc 2019 at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2020. Our Sauvignon Blanc 2019 was also awarded a rating of 96 points, making it the highest rated Sauvignon Blanc in Australia at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2020 and the only Sauvignon Blanc from Australia to achieve the distinction of a Gold Medal.

Exceptional fruit from Cape Landing Block’s CL2 and CL4 produce elegant wines that are wonderfully aromatic, vibrant, and perfectly balanced.

Texture, palate length and a more serious, sophisticated profile are all achieved with use of French oak to mature a portion of the wine.

A perfect companion to……just about anything!A

Rosé

Rosé is synonymous with great weather and good times, but this versatile Cape Landing Rosé delivers far more – we like to think ‘Forever Summer’ – Provençal with panache!

Pristine fruit from our Block CL7 Shiraz is picked early in the growing season whilst baumé levels are low and at similar levels to harvested Sauvignon Blanc.

Fruit is harvested in the cool early hours of morning, immediately de-stemmed and then gently pressed to extract only the purest juice, the most delicate flavours and a delicate blush of colour.

The juice is settled overnight before being racked to ferment in stainless steel, ensuring that we only use the lightest solids and textural elements in the fermentation process.

After a long cool ferment the wine undergoes bâttonage once a fortnight for 4 months in order to extract every last drop of texture, weight and complexity from the fine lees.

When aging is complete the wine is blended, lightly fined and filtered before bottling.

Delicately fruity, great tannic strength, complex textures, and natural acidity, ready for any social occasion and a wide range of food pairings, whatever the weather or season.

Aromas of rose petal and ripe strawberries, cherries and watermelon, gently intertwined with fine white tannins.

Blistering natural acidity provides length to the palate, balanced by a persistent mineral finish of cherry blossoms and citrus.
